Remembering Skip Brown

During his 50+ years of leading Belts, Skip expanded a small 1800’s waterfront warehousing company into the modern multi-faceted regional logistics and warehousing company we are today

As a young man, S. A. “Skip” Brown, III worked for Belt’s Wharf Warehouses, a family business started in the 1800’s in the Fells Point area of Baltimore City. Before the relocation of the Port of Baltimore, he helped unload the last steamship to call in Fells Point before containerization took over the industry.

In the years to come, Skip worked his way up from the waterfront docks to the CEO’s office. Throughout his career, Brown grew the family’s company tenfold into the modern Belts Corporation. He also founded several other corporations, including Belt’s Transportation Services, Inc., Belt’s Intermodal Corporation and Belt’s Realty Services, Inc.

Former Baltimore Mayor and Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer credited Skip with bringing the shoe and sports-ware manufacturer FILA to Maryland and developing a 653,000-square foot national distribution center for the company.

As President of Belts Realty Services, Brown developed and owned other such distribution center and real estate projects, that brought companies and jobs to the Port of Baltimore and State of Maryland.

Skip served on the Board of the Baltimore Development Corporation for 11 years, under then Mayors Kurt Schmoke and Martin O’Malley. Governor Parris Glendening appointed Skip as Chair of the Governor’s Port Land Use Task Force, which created a comprehensive strategy for waterfront land use in Baltimore City and beyond.
